[Québec, Canada] October 11, 2024 — Do you hear a buzz in the air? Erupting Avocado, in collaboration with indie.io, announces that The Hungry Fly, a psychological horror adventure, will infest Steam’s ecosystem on October 23. This unique, grotesque, PS1-styled game puts players in the role of a fly who feasts on corpses. Trouble is, the fly lives in a marsh where all are doomed to life.
The marsh teems with life, wanted or not, and the plight of the fly goes unanswered, as it looks for food with its razor-sharp mandibles. On its quest, the ravenous little bug will meet fellow creatures of the marsh, each of whom is broken in unique and increasingly disturbing ways - completely unable to die.
As in all fairy tales, for the Hungry Fly is the heir to a long tradition of fables, fairy tales, and folk stories that are equal parts disturbing and fascinating. Our dirty, filthy, mandible-brandishing fly will find something to eat, something delicious. It will bite into these morsels, pushing the story forward as it returns to the swamp again and again, each time more hungry than the one before. How do you sate the hunger of a dirty fly on a mission? A fly who will brave the worst dangers, even the dreaded incandescent lightbulb to devour… A monster.
A monster living in a bath somewhere far away. But before that can happen, a swamp full of those doomed to life awaits - and a shifting, changing story that eventually leads the fly - and the player - to one of three endings, each as odd as the world they just passed through.
This surrealistic tale of hunger, horror, and hopelessness is rendered in the finest graphics available to PlayStation, the very first one, to bring home the damp, creepy atmosphere of the marsh tormented with life, a house tormented with marshlands, and a bath occupied by a monster.
None of it is random or accidental, as Francois Mathieu, one half of the development studio explains: “I gathered my weird childhood souvenirs (tapes, drawings, toys, etc.), then we combined them into a nostalgic personal story. “ In face, “some elements you’ll eat in the game are made from real objects from that time.”
The Hungry Fly was created by Erupting Avocado, an indie studio formed by two longtime friends, Jonathan and François. It builds on the poetry of the grotesque and the theater of the surreal first explored in their debut title, The Repairing Mantis: Whereas the fly hungers, the mantis repairs - a bridge made of living flesh of a flying squirrel.
